OLYMPICS and JUBILEE - LOCAL

The Olympic Torch will be coming through Pant and Llanymynech in the morning of Wednesday 30th May 2012.
The Queen’s Jubilee day is Tuesday 5th June 2012
To mark these events, the Parish and Community Councils are holding joint open meetings. The purpose of the meetings is to organise events to mark these unique occasions.

Current thinking is to have two celebrations:
one to mark the Olympic torch coming through the villages on 30th May 2012.
the second to take part in the ‘Big Lunch’ on Sunday 3rd June 2012

The next meeting is described below. NOTE - all are welcome to give their views.

LLANYMYNECH AND PANT PARISH COUNCIL

Minutes of the Public Meeting held on the 6th December 2011 at Llanymynech Village Hall, jointly with Carreghofa Community Council.

PRESENT: Cllr Mrs. Dilys Gaskill (Chairman), Cllr Chris Backshall, Powys Cllr Arwel Jones, Shropshire Cllr Arthur Walpole, Clerk Vivien Byrne, Martin Clare, Rachel Humphreys, Marian Ingram, Fiona James, Carol Jones, Paddy Martin, Meryl Rogers and Joan Zorn.

HM QUEEN ELIZABETH 11 DIAMOND JUBILEE. Discussion opened on the celebration of the Jubilee and the possibility of lighting a Beacon on Llanymynech Hill. Agreed to enquire if the Golf Club would be willing to participate by providing the venue as the Club has suitable lighting and car parking.

A memento of the Jubilee was discussed and mugs were not favoured as they had already been circulated for the Carreghofa celebration. It was suggested that coins or spoons would be suitable.

The various events taking place in the locality on the weekend of the 1st June were mentioned.

OLYMPIC TORCH. The Torch will travel through the villages on the 30th May 2012 and it was agreed this would be the suitable date to mark the historic event as well as the Diamond Jubilee. As many people may be away taking advantage of the extra bank holidays, an event on the Jubilee day may not have sufficient support. Various suggestions were made – Sports or Fun Day, 1950’s themed tea party in the village hall. Involvement of the LADS amateur dramatics and Youth Drama. Red, White and Blue hanging baskets throughout the village and English flags on one side of the route with Welsh Flags on the other.

Agreement was reached on the two primary schools being taken to welcome the Torch, then transported to the King George V Playing Field in Llanymynech (if wet the Village Hall could be used) for a fun mini Olympics, with medals awarded to winners. The children to be provided with picnic style lunch at 12 noon, then providing entertainment in the Hall prior to a 1950’s themed lunch for Senior Citizens or families. Entrance to be by a Ration Book style ticket obtained in advance to indicate numbers attending.

ACTIONS:

Rachel and Paul, Headteachers to liaise on school activities and arrangements.
Vivien Byrne to make a bid to LJC for funding.
Village W.I.’s to be invited to be in charge of catering.
Chris Backshall to contact and liaise with Golf Club regarding Beacon.
Dilys Gaskill to research coins and spoons.
Vivien Byrne to organise Ration Book Tickets.

Next Meeting to be arranged in January.

LLANYMYNECH AND PANT PARISH COUNCIL

Minutes of the Meeting held on the 17th January 2012 at Llanymynech Village Hall, jointly with Carreghofa Community Council.

PRESENT: Cllr Mrs. Dilys Gaskill (Chairman), Cllr Chris Backshall, Shropshire Cllr Arthur Walpole, Clerk Vivien Byrne, Nick Dixon, Irene Evison, Glyn Gaskill, Rachel Humphreys, Marian Ingram, Carol Jones, and Joan Zorn.

OLYMPIC TORCH. The Torch will travel through the villages on the 30th May 2012 and it was queried whether the children could be invited to Marshall. It was suggested that Sports Clubs could line the route.

HM QUEEN ELIZABETH 11 DIAMOND JUBILEE. A memento of the Celebrations for the children was discussed and it was noted there are 250 children in the two primary schools. Chris Backshall asked that School Governors be involved and said that Carreghofa School Governors had decided to purchase separately, rather than have the same memento for both schools. Coins and medals to be researched.

Vivien Byrne said that an application for £1,000 had been made to the Shropshire Council Local Joint Committee and the outcome would be known at their next meeting on the 7th February.

Llanymynech WI had agreed to be involved in the catering, but would prefer to cater for a tea party. Pant WI were to be asked to cater for the children’s picnic and it was agreed to approach Llanyblodwel WI.

Chris Backshall to enquire if the Golf Club would be willing to participate in the Beacon on the 4th June.

Tony Beardsell had promised to have the Limeworks chimney smoking on the 3rd June.

A timescale of games until noon, picnic to 1.30pm, tea at 3pm and entertainment at 4pm (Helen to be approached – Irene will contact) Glyn will try to obtain a dvd of the Coronation to have this running in the Hall. Marian will ask the LADS about entertainment.

Discussion then ensued on the two events taking place on the same day and the link between them. It was then suggested that the games etc on the 30th May be a children’s event and the Sunday 3rd June be the Jubilee Lunch on Llanymynech Playing Field for everyone. People would be invited to bring their own picnic and just tea and cakes would be provided. It was agreed to register for The Big Lunch.

  • Date of Next Meeting – 21st February 2012 at Llanymynech Village Hall at 7pm.
