A Suggested Day Visit For Key Stage Two Classes – History Focus

Teachers can use the facility in any way they wish to suit the needs of their children. However, one approach may be for children and adults, either guides or teaching staff, to adopt the roles of people working on the site around 1900. Prompt cards are provided to guide groups around the site, provide information and suggest questions or commentaries.

 Arrival

- Children walk to the Stables Block to leave coats and use toilets

Tour of the quarries

- Children in role, playing the part of youngsters hoping to be taken on as apprentices in 1900

- Children climb Llanymynech Hill to visit the quarries and view the kilns, the inclined plane and other industrial remains

- Guide / teacher adopts role of foreman, leading them along the recommended route, using information found on prompt cards on the web site

Lunch

- Children return to Stables Block for packed lunch

- In three groups, with adult supervision, they:

1) examine the model of the Inclined Plane

2) attempt to identify different artefacts

3) try moving a tramway truck

Visit to The Hoffmann Kiln

- Still in role, the group visit the kiln as it might have been in 1899 when it was about to be fired up for use

- After exploring the kiln, they meet a workman, in role, who responds to questions about the working conditions of the job

Stables Block

- An opportunity to meet a mines inspector (Five years later, still in role) and answer questions about their jobs

Return

- Visit the toilets if necessary

- View the Montgomery Canal before meeting the coach in the car park
