Truckloads of Fun at Llanymynech Discovery Day
This years Discovery Day is on Saturday May 17th from 12 Midday to 5 pm. There will be a multitude of stalls and attractions at the Canal Wharf Visitor Centre, the British Waterways Car Park and around the Heritage Area.
The Discovery Day will feature the official launch (at 2.00 pm) of Monty 08, a summer long series of events designed to focus attention on the restoration of the Montgomery Canal. A section of the Porthywaen Silver Band will provide a fitting introduction. The Day will also provide an opportunity to explore the recently completed Llanymynech Limeworks Heritage Area, with its restored Hoffmann Kiln, interpretation work, steel sculptures and accessible pathways.
Once again there will be a Victorian theme with stall holders dressing in period costume to lend an old time flavour to the event.
The Duchess Countess Trust will be running regular canal boat trips and donkey rides will take place in the field adjoining the canal. There will be stalls celebrating local crafts and skills as well participatory activities with the Friends of the Montgomery Canal, the Shropshire Countryside Service, Powysland Museum, the Shropshire Geological Society and Shropshire Family History Society.
The local Stonehouse Brewery will provide a beer, cider and other refreshments and there will be a BBQ. A children’s discovery trail involving a WOW (Wild About Water) passbook will lead to stalls offering children special tasks and the opportunity to earn a prize. Local musicians will be playing around the site and a local children’s drama group will perform extracts from their forthcoming musical Oliver!
Limestone will be burnt in the new demonstration lime kiln and guided walks will describe how the limestone industry grew and flourished in Llanymynech.
